Elazığ earthquake (24th of October 2020) generated a variety of economic impacts and these impacts adversely affected the economy and the citizens access to livelihood resources in the region. The economic impact of Elazığ earthquake on people can be classified as: (i) losses to immovable assets – damaged or destroyed building, (ii) losses to movable assets (iii) economic losses due to business interruption, (iv) household income losses due to death, injury, and job disruption. The first impact consists of the direct economic losses due to destroyed or severely damaged buildings and other structures. Losses to movable assets consist of economic losses due to damaged or destroyed contents of buildings and other private property. Elazığ earthquake caused economic losses and significantly affected the continuity of daily life. It has also disrupted both local and social development, leading to severe economic and social losses.
The proposed Needs Map Recovery Fund seek to design and implement a long-term sustainable model to help to reestablish livelihood resources for people affected by Elazığ earthquake. The Recovery Fund designed based on the planned initial assessment to identify the earthquakes damage to economic and livelihood activities. The analysis also identified and pinpoint the needs to stimulate economic recovery in a resilient approach. The Recovery Fund alleviated micro-funding towards affected households based on their previous economic activities. Thus, the micro-funding stage included indirect support to recover damaged income-generation activities through, such as, purchasing of farm animals and machinery, and repair and rebuilding costs. Within the project, a total of 16 families’ livelihoods are supported by micro-funding.
