As a result of the destruction caused by the earthquake on February 6, 2023, many people lost their homes and belongings in the region, and the cities’ infrastructure system suffered from serious damages. During those conditions, in addition to shelter needs, the other two most important needs to be met for people, who began to stay in irregular living conditions in the area, were drinking water and food. To support the solution of the emerging needs and accompanying problems, Needs Map conducted large-scale operations to meet the urgent basic needs of people in need in the region and subsequently established Container Cities in two provinces (Hatay, Kahramanmaras) for shelter needs.
In this regard, Needs Map procured the necessary materials to provide humanitarian assistance (as food packages, hygiene materials, clothes, blankets etc.) based on the needs analyses conducted in the affected areas as part of the project. This ensured the provision of food (emergency food needs for approximately 13,000 people), clothing (emergency clothing needs for approximately 200 people), and shelter (construction of approximately 200 containers and household item needs). To provide a comprehensive solution to the housing problem, logistics such as renting logistical vehicles and providing vehicle fuel were arranged to transport and distribute the relevant support materials to the regions, meeting the needs of the container houses in the Living Areas (container cities) established. Additionally, within the scope of the project, the operational needs of field teams and human resource expenses were covered. Thus, in addition to meeting urgent needs in the short term, medium and long-term contributions were provided to the region.
